Hickory’s downtown parking deck is expected to reopen in May, said the city’s Communications Specialist Sarah Killian. The parking deck, located on Trade Alley and First Avenue NW, closed for maintenance and repairs on Feb. 17.

The city’s Feb. 10 press release said the parking deck would be closed for about 90 days. Killian said the maintenance and repair work is still on schedule, and that the contract is for 90 days, including weekends.

Since the parking deck closed on Feb. 17, it should reopen around May 18. Steel brackets are stacked inside of the parking garage in downtown Hickory on March 12.

The beams will be installed to expansion joints on the garage and parking deck to reduce sway and reinforce the structure. Killian said maintenance work includes refreshing parking lines and adding a topcoat sealant. She said repairs include replacing the concrete sidewalk near the top deck that was eroding and strengthening the joints where concrete slabs meet.

The work cost about $300,000, Killian said, and came from the public services budget for planned maintenance and repairs. Miya Banks is an education reporter at the Hickory Daily Record. Stay up-to-date on the latest in local and national government and political topics with our newsletter.
