Newly sworn-in Rep. Troy Downing recently told a Helena grassroots group that he was entering this congressional session with some optimism. U.
S. Rep. Troy Downing, R-Montana Downing, a Republican elected Nov.
5 to the eastern congressional district seat previously held by GOP Rep. Matt Rosendale, told members of Hometown Helena on Thursday about his first few days in Congress. Downing was not a planned speaker for the group that meets at Helena College, but stopped by while in town.
He said there were slightly more than 60 freshmen of various backgrounds coming in this session of the 119th Congress. Downing, who prior to the election served as Montana’s commissioner of securities and insurance, said that without exception, “people are showing up because they want to govern.” “That’s refreshing, people understand that we have to work together, we have to deliver for the American people, even though we’re in the formational process now, it gives me a lot of hope," he said.
Downing said he was appointed to three House Financial Services subcommittees: the Capital Markets Subcommittee, the Digital Assets, Financial Technology, and Artificial Intelligence Subcommittee, and the Housing and Insurance Subcommittee. His office said recently he is also one of the newest members of the committee’s Monetary Policy, Treasury Market Resilience, and Economic Prosperity Task Force. Downing said Thursday these appointments complement the work he did as securities and insurance commissioner in Montana.
He said his goal was to make sure Montana has a voice in Washington, D.C., and to make sure laws and mandates from the federal government made sense for a rural state such as Montana.
“We need to have our own solutions that work here,” he said. Assistant editor Phil Drake can be reached at 406-231-9021. Be the first to know Get local news delivered to your inbox!
