A damning report from the Care Quality Commission has led to the closure of a care service for disabled and elderly people in west Dorset - www.dorsetecho.co.uk

Health and care regulator the Care Quality Commission said it has 'taken action to protect people' by removing the registration of Bridport-based care at home provider Emmcare - which will effectively cancel the service. The service was 'poorly managed', had a lack of skilled staff and people being cared for were at a 'risk of harm', the CQC said. Emmcare Limited did not appeal the decision which means it will stop carrying out personal care in the coming weeks.

The CQC said it found 'multiple continued breaches' of regulations during the latest inspection and a 'lack of compliance with previous enforcement action'. It said the service had failed to meet regulations relating to person centred care, safe care and treatment, staffing and good governance. Emmcare was providing support to 6 people living in their own homes at the time of the assessment.

People using the service will be moved to an alternative provider. It is not known how many jobs have been lost as a result. The service's overall rating, and the areas of safe and well-led were again rated as inadequate.

Effective and responsive were re-rated as requires improvement. Inspectors raised concerns, including the fact that leaders had not ensured staff completed all training they needed. Staff did not always work well together to provide safe care that met people's needs, and staff.
