COMBE DOWN 39 Dorchester's hopes of avoiding relegation took a severe blow, losing to fellow strugglers Combe Down on Saturday, writes Andy Hamworth. Dorchester dominated the early stages, causing the visitors all kinds of problems at scrum time. So it was no surprise when No 8 Steve Tucker touched down at the base of another dominant scrum.
The visitors hit back when they benefited from an error in midfield, allowing their always dangerous backs to score in the corner. The first half continued in the same vein. Hooker Scott Clarke scoring from another forward drive and Combe Down's backs equalising.
As half time approached Dorchester's backs got on the board, Flynn Drummond slicing through under the posts. Brook Legg's successful conversion giving Dorchester a five point lead at the break. The hosts' lead did not last long into the second period, Combe Down adding a converted try to their total.
Dorchester brought on Jamie Morgan and he had an immediate effect, blasting through Combe Down's midfield and putting a grubber that Flynn Drummond was able to run down for his second try. Brooke Legg added the extras and Dorchester led again. Entering the final quarter Combe Down equalised, driving a lineout over in the right corner.
As tempers frayed both sides lost a man to the bin and some poor tackling allowed the visitors to cross for two quick tries, one of which was converted. Combe Down then took the gap out to fifteen points with a simple penalty. Dorchester had the last word, replacement Lee King crashing over from close range.
Jamie Morgan added the conversion but it was too little too late..
