Trumpcession is nigh

The iPhone price will be dearer to users soon. Trump is squarely to blame. And it goes beyond just tariffs on China.

America’s most popular smartphone, the iPhone, is manufactured in China, the de facto factory of the world, which produces everything under the sun. While trade wars and privacy concerns have caused several companies to move their manufacturing units to Vietnam and India too, under the guise of Make in India, the majority of manufacturing and assembling is still done beyond the Great Wall. 70% of all iPhones are produced at Foxconn at its production site in Zhengzhou in China.

While India is slapped with a 26% retaliatory tariff, padosi China faces a whopping 34%; however, with 20% existing rates, the actual tariff on the red dragon is 54%! China has hit back with an additional 34% tariff back at Trump. This gully danda between the lads will go on for the foreseeable future, which is not in the interest of American products manufactured/assembled in China and iPhone users in particular. And it is not a mere ‘Tariff on China’ problem.

Per Reuters’ report, the production cost will go up by 43 percent. Ergo, a 1TB variant iPhone 16 Pro Max will cost $701 more at $2300 (or over Rs 1.71 lakh) from its current price of $1599!.

Per the latest Wall Street Journal article’s breakdown, citing analyst Wayne LAM, the cost of individual parts post-Trump Tariff will bump up the rates. For instance, a 256 GB variant of the iPhone 16 Pro model will cost $270 more, from $550 to $820, as explained on the infographic below. Components like processors, display units, memory chips, etc.

, cost $90.85, $37.97, and $21.

62, respectively. Processors are Taiwanese imports, whereas displays are made in China. Memory chips are the sole component made in the USA.

The most expensive among all the iPhone parts is the Rear Camera Array that is produced in Japan, costing $126.95 currently. Fantastic graphic from the WSJ.

Trump just increased the price of a iPhone by nearly 60 percent. Obviously completely unsustainable so won’t be sustained. An American Liz Truss moment pic.
