Former President Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the race for the White House, reaching 270 electoral votes after securing North Carolina, Georgia and finally Pennsylvania just before 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to multiple election forecasters.
Trump will return to the White House four years after being ousted by President Joe Biden. He delivered an emphatic defeat to Harris, running up especially strong margins for Republicans among nonwhite and male voters. North Carolina and Georgia were the first two swing states called, erasing the Sun Belt path to victory for Harris by 11 p.m.
Harris Campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon circulated a memo to campaign staff around 11 p.m. telling them to “get some sleep” and that the campaign would be back to win on Wednesday.
However, Harris’s returns continued to lag. Around 1 a.m.
