Donald Trump 'assassin' was 400 yards from former President in shrubbery, officials say

As protocol, Secret Service agents in golf carts secure the area several holes ahead of him as a precaution - and are believed to have done so as the alleged attempt was foiled.

Donald Trump was just 400 to 500 yards away from a gunman minutes before a suspected assassination attempt was foiled , officials say. The former President was playing a round of golf at his West Palm Beach club when Secret Service agents spotted a rifle poking through a fence line . As protocol, Secret Service agents in golf carts usually secure the area several holes ahead of him as a precaution.

An AK-47 with a scope, a GoPro and two backpacks were recovered from the other side of the fence and the suspect has been identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58.



In a press conference at 5pm, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the suspect was apprehended on I-95 after being spotted running out of bushes and jumping into a black Nissan SUV. "After that we took the witness and he identified him as the person seen running out of the bushes and jumping into a car," Bradshaw said. The GoPro was attached to the other side of the fence and investigators believe this was to film an assassination attempt.
