The film, titled 'Children,' is the second by Ukrainian filmmaker Lora Arkhypenko, who fled Kyiv after the Russian invasion. The premiere will be held at Shropshire Council's Old Market Hall cinema in Shrewsbury. Her first documentary, 'Women,' premiered at the same venue in 2024 and centred on Ukrainian women affected by the war.
The new film looks at the lives of Ukrainian children who have made Shropshire their home. It tells their personal stories of adaptation, the support of their mothers, and how they balance their Ukrainian roots with their new life in the UK. The documentary also explores themes of self-identification as these children grow up between two cultures.
Ms Arkhypenko, originally from Odesa, said: "My first film ‘Women’ was about Ukrainian women who fled from Ukraine and the issues that they have lived with since arriving in the UK. "‘Children’ picks up their story and more importantly focuses attention on their children who, in some instances, have spent more of their young lives in the UK than Ukraine and adapted to life in Shropshire." The premiere of 'Children' is a private event, but a public screening will be held at the Old Market Hall cinema in May, with tickets set to be released in April. More information on Ms Arkhypenko's first film can be found on Shropshire Council's website..
