FARGO — Doctors at Sanford Health report a surge in respiratory illnesses and stomach bugs this season, with children being particularly affected. Dr. Brandon Meyer, a general pediatrician at Sanford Health, says this is the peak season for influenza, as well as other common illnesses.
He emphasized that fever is often a key indicator parents should monitor closely. “Generally, if you’re (temperature is) above 100.4, you probably shouldn’t be out in public because you’re likely contagious with something,” Meyer advised.
Sanford pediatricians recommend using a rectal thermometer for the most accurate readings, especially for infants, but note that under-the-tongue, ear, or armpit thermometers are acceptable alternatives. For children showing symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, vomiting or diarrhea, Meyer urges parents to keep them home and ensure full recovery before returning to school. “If your baby is under 3 months old and has a fever, it’s best to seek urgent care,” Meyer added, stressing the importance of immediate medical attention for infants with elevated temperatures.
