Chennai: DMK 's legal wing has condemned "baseless charges" made by the Enforcement Directorate against Tamil Nadu's municipality department. They criticised the "raking up of cases" that were more than a decade old, and which they said was a move by BJP to please its new alliance partner AIADMK. In a statement on Saturday, DMK MP and party's legal wing secretary N R Elango said BJP govt at the Centre was using Central govt agencies to threaten any party or state govt that opposed it strongly.
In this regard, they took up a 10-year-old bank loan case and made baseless charges against the municipality department, said Elango. He said ED raids conducted in the city recently were connected to a loan obtained through a private bank. This loan was repaid with interest, and there was no corruption in this case.
Also, the high court had already ruled that there was no need for a CBI inquiry into the case. Elango said after ED too failed to find any misappropriation, it was spreading false information about misappropriation in the department. There were no complaints, FIRs, or chargesheets against the department of municipal administration, said Elango.
Hence, the ED conducted searches so that BJP could impress its new alliance partner, he said..
