Excelsior CorrespondentJAMMU, Mar 15: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Jammu, under the guidance of Y P Bourney, Chairman DLSA Jammu and Principal District and Sessions Judge (PDJ) Jammu, carried out a comprehensive inspection at Central Jail, Kot Bhalwal. The initiative, led by Smriti Sharma, Sub Judge and Secretary DLSA Jammu, aimed to assess the living conditions, facilities, and overall welfare of inmates.The inspection was conducted in the presence of Veerinder Kumar Bhat, Superintendent of Central Jail Kot Bhalwal and Anil Sharma, Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel, Jammu.
The team visited various sections of the Jail, including the barracks, jail hospital, kitchen area, legal aid clinic and virtual VC rooms, to gain first-hand insight into the conditions of undertrial prisoners, detenues and convicts.During the visit, interactions were held with inmates to understand their concerns and grievances. The team also examined the food quality served in the prison and assessed the medical facilities available to the inmates.
The jail hospital and medical center were thoroughly inspected to ensure that proper healthcare services were being provided.Furthermore, the inspection identified areas within the jail premises that require renovation. On-the-spot directions were issued to the Superintendent to address these concerns promptly.
The visit emphasized the importance of upholding the rights and welfare of prisoners, ensuring that they are provided with adequate living conditions, legal assistance, and healthcare facilities.Speaking on the occasion, officials reiterated the commitment of the DLSA Jammu to safeguarding the rights of inmates and ensuring that prison conditions align with legal and humanitarian standards. The initiative is seen as a crucial step in strengthening prison reforms and providing necessary support to inmates.
