A candidate running for a board member seat in the 1st District of Maguindanao del Sur was shot with his driver by unidentified armed men in the municipality of Datu Anggal Midtimbang on Sunday. The victim, identified as Muhammad Utti Omar, also known as “Datu Baba”, sustained minor injuries, the Maguindanao del Sur Police Provincial Office. His driver Abel Bunsalagat Buisan however sustained serious injuries.
Investigation showed that Omar came from a proclamation rally and was in his MPV driven by Buisan when they were fired upon by armed men aboard a silver minivan with no plate number at around 3:10 p.m. along the National Highway in Barangay Brar.
Buisan was still able to drive the vehicle to the police station in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte to ask for help. Omar has been pronounced out of danger while Buisan is still being observed at the hospital due to gunshot wounds. The Maguindanao del Sur Police Provincial Office said police from the Datu Anggal Midtimbang Municipal Police Station together with additional Philippine National Police personnel stationed at the PNP outpost in the area returned fire at the attackers.
This forced the unidentified suspects to flee toward Barangay Kedati in the municipality of Talayan in Maguindanao del Sur. Police said 50 fired cartridges from unidentified rifle were recovered at the crime scene. A hot pursuit operation was launched to find the perpetrators of the crime.
