Disney has reportedly put a pause on the live-action version of Tangled amid the box-office numbers of the live action version of Snow White

It looks like the live-action Tangled is no longer being worked on . The live-action reimagining of Disney 's Tangled was said to be in active development with Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) directing and Thor: Love and Thunder writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson penning the script. According to what studio insiders told The Hollywood Reporter , the development of the film has been put on hold.

The choice to place the film on hold for right now comes amid the less-than-stellar box office numbers for Snow White. According to Box Office Mojo , Snow White has grossed nearly $73 million dollars domestically and almost $149 million worldwide. Per THR, the production budget of the film was $270 million and had escalated due to the 2023 labor strikes It is not clear if this pause will stay or if a live-action version will exist in the future.

Tangled, the animated film, came out in 2010 and was loosely based on the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale, Rapunzel. In the animated film, Mandy Moore voiced Rapunzel, Zachary Levi voiced Flynn Rider, and Donna Murphy was Mother Gothel. Disney has been since been steadily making live-action versions of their classics since the 2010s.

The strategy for that has had some mixed results with some live-actions features doing amazingly such as Lion King, Beauty and the Beast Aladdin while others like Dumbo as well as Pete’s Dragon just doing okay. Mulan ended up bombed as made $69.9 million at the box office to a $200 million but the film did come out in the height of the pandemic in 2020 and was also surrounded by other controversies such changing the source material, filming in Xinjiang with the persecution of Uighur Muslims and the star actress Liu Yifei expressing support for Hong Kong police leading to boycott calls from pro-democracy protestors.

Barry Jenkins’ Mufasa: The Lion King, the live-action sequel to The King and the most recent in the live-action features before Snow White, did not have the most favorable start at the box office. It initially made $35.4 million domestic opening weekend and then made $718 million globally.

Time will tell if Snow White could potentially follow that path. Despite pausing Tangled, there are still more remakes reportedly happening like Hercules , The Aristocats , Robin Hood, and Bambi. Also, Disney has Lilo and Stitch coming up on May 23.

The interest and/or curiosity seems present for the remake as the Super Bowl spot with Stitch garnered 173.1 million views in 24 hours, leading it to be Disney’s most viewed spot digitally. Then the trailer became the second most viewed Disney live-action trailer of all time with 158 million views in 24 hours.

There is additionally a live-action Moana coming, set for July 10, 2026. Production has wrapped for on November 22, 2024. DAILY NEWSLETTER: Sign up here to get the latest news and updates from the Mirror US straight to your inbox with our FREE newsletter.
