Disgraced Huw Edwards issues apology to those he has 'betrayed' ahead of sentencing

Shamed former BBC presenter Huw Edwards is in court in London today to be sentenced after pleading guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children

Disgraced Huw Edwards has issued an apology to those he has 'betrayed' ahead of sentencing, a court heard today. Defence barrister Philip Evans KC said Huw Edwards was “truly sorry” for how he has “damaged his family and his loved ones”, and for committing the offences. He told Westminster Magistrates' Court: “He knows he has hurt and he has damaged his family and his loved ones around him.

For all of this, he is truly sorry and he is truly sorry he has committed these offences.” The shamed BBC News At Ten anchor pleaded guilty in July this year to three counts of making indecent photographs / pseudo-photographs of a child. Seven of the 41 images were the most serious type.



Edwards was “vulnerable” when convicted paedophile Alex Williams first messaged him, the court heard. “Alex Williams sought him out and he sought him out on Instagram at a time when Mr Edwards can properly be described as having been vulnerable," his barrister went on. “Independent experts have assessed him as being mentally vulnerable at that time.

” The defence barrister continued: “He is no longer on television. “You have witnessed the manner in which he has fallen from grace as a consequence of this offending. He was sought out by Alex Williams and as a consequence of being sought out.

.. in amongst those lawful communications Mr Edwards was sent (images), he did not request in fact he positively at times tried to resist those images – but ended up with them in any event.

” Earlier this morning, the court heard how Edwards wrote “yes xxx” when he was asked by Williams if he wanted to receive sexual images of a person whose “age could be discerned as being between 14 and 16”. Evidence has been heard including a message exchange with Williams, 25, the man who shared indecent images with the former BBC star. Prosecutor Ian Hope said: “From that chat in December 2020, Alex Williams said that he had ‘a file of vids and pics for you of someone special’.

Mr Edwards immediately queried who the subject was and was then sent three images of seemingly the same person, from two of which images the subject’s age could be discerned as being between 14 and 16. “These two were category C indecent images of children in which the child was exposing his penis. “Alex Williams stated that he had ‘12 videos and 42 pics I’ve sent you a video of him before’.
