Pune: The director and headmistress of an English medium school in Manjari were booked by the Hadapsar police on Tuesday night on the charge of illegally running the institute since 2019. An FIR relating to cheating and forgery was registered against both officials. Assistant inspector Deepak Barge on Wednesday said a two-member inquiry committee was set up after the education department of Pune zilla parishad received a complaint from a Hadapsar resident stating that the school was operating without permission from the state govt.

Barge said, "The school authorities did not furnish documents to show that the institute was legal during the inquiry. The officer summoned the director and principal for a hearing, but they did not turn up. Only the complainant turned up for the hearing.

" Block education officer Dnyanoba Koshe from Haveli panchayat samiti, in his FIR, said that the school earlier submitted a fake govt resolution of March 8, 2019, to them to show that the school was legal since 2019. Sanjay Naikkade, education officer of Pune zilla parishad, said they received a complaint in Nov questioning the legality of the school. "We initiated an inquiry and directed the school to provide its registration documents.

Meanwhile, the complainant filed an Right to Information (RTI) Act plea and obtained confirmation from the education ministry that the school's registration is not listed with them. When the school failed to furnish relevant documents, we instructed the block education officer to file an FIR." Barge said the panchayat samiti's group education officer examined the govt resolution and other documents submitted by the school and the RTI activist, and then concluded that the school was illegal.

TOI had earlier reported that Pune zilla parishad's education officer Sanjay Naikade has issued a comprehensive advisory to prevent parents from being misled about schools. Parents were urged to verify key details such as the school's affiliation certificate, its valid UDISE (Unified District Information System for Education) number, and whether the facilities promised in advertisements are genuinely in place. If parents found discrepancies or missing facilities, they could lodge a complaint with the education department, and police action will be initiated against such schools, he had warned.
