Login or signup to continue reading The Newcastle Herald reported on Tuesday that Stanton had been sent a termination notice by club management on Monday afternoon. Stanton's agent Tony Rallis, speaking on You Tube show Football Fever, confirmed that his client had been sacked.
The club did not initially comment but released a statement on Thursday regarding Stanton's exit. "The Newcastle Jets can confirm that Rob Stanton will depart the club at the end of the 2024-25 season," the statement read. "The club's ownership group Maverick Sports Partners and the board would like to thank Rob for his contribution over the last two seasons in what was a difficult and turbulent time for the Newcastle Jets organisation and wish him all the best for the remainder of the season and for the future.
"A formal announcement regarding the new head coach who will take the role of the men's A-League team in 2025-26 will be announced in the near future." The Herald reported on Wednesday that the Jets were close to finalising a deal with former Socceroos midfielder Mark Milligan as their new coach . There has been speculation over Stanton's future for the past few weeks.
On March 10, the Herald reported Stanton had signed a two-year extension with the Jets but had told players that he may not be at the helm of the A-League side next season after an impasse with club management over football department resources and staffing. Stanton spoke about his uncertain future a few days later after the Jets beat third-placed Melbourne City in Melbourne to equal a 20-year-old club record run of seven games unbeaten. "To be honest, I'm not really worried about my future," Stanton said at the time.
"For me, I want to coach where I'm working with really good people, good players, whether they're young or whether they're older, and I want to make sure that I have the tools that I can develop them to be the best they can be. "If I don't have that, then my future would alter greatly ..
. at the end of the day, you'll see what's going to happen and it is what it is. "For me, personally, I'm happy now because I can see the work I've done and I can see it's at a point where the players now are almost in control themselves, and that's where I wanted to get them.
