Ludhiana: The MC has filed a reply in an ongoing petition pertaining to solid impermeable interlocking tiles fixed above road level in several localities with the National Green Tribunal. In its reply, the civic body gave reasons for not opting for perforated tiles . It was alleged that despite NGT orders of 2021, MC and Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) continued to fix solid interlocking concrete tiles within one meter of prohibited areas around trees.

With such tiles being fixed above road level, there was waterlogging on roads in the rainy season, causing damage to roads. It was also pointed out that the impermeable tiles prevented percolation of water, affecting groundwater level. In its reply, MC said that it did not opt for perforated tiles as they would cause difficulties for elderly, infirm and children using the footpaths as they would find it difficult to walk on such tiles.

The civic body added that it got perforated tiles fixed in large parks. It said that 5% area at Sidhwan Canal Waterfront on Ishmeet Singh Road, Leisure Valley adjoining MC Zone D office, Green Belt from Dugri Chowk to Railways Lines and Mini Rose Garden had been covered with perforated tiles. In compliance with the previous directions passed by the NGT, no interlocking tile had been fixed around one meter radius of trees, the MC stated, adding that it had incorporated guidelines issued by the Tribunal in work orders and agreements of all development works.

It was also submitted that a compliance report regarding removal of interlocking tiles around one meter radius of trees was submitted before the civil judge (senior division), Ludhiana in an ongoing case every month.
