Bill Belichick is full of football knowledge. But apparently he knows quite a bit about weather — wind patterns, to be exact. Former Patriots safety Devin McCourty shared a story of his former coach during a recent appearance on the “ This is Football ” podcast where he said Belichick predicted a wind pattern prior to New England’s game against the New York Jets in 2010.

“He grabs all the corners, and he grabs me. He said, ‘Hey, running down this sideline, the way the wind pattern is in our stadium going toward the open end, the wind rolls like this,’” McCourty shared to host Kevin Clark . “‘So the ball is going to look like it’s going further than it is, but it’s going to hit the wind, and it’s just gonna drop.

So when you’re running on this side, make sure you turn around and get your head back.’ And I remember sitting there like, ‘Really, dude? The wind pattern?’” While it may have seem far-fetched, it wasn’t long before McCourty realized Belichick was right about the wind that it helped the then-rookie get an interception. It was then he learned to not question Belichick when it came to football — regardless if weather was involved.

“Sure enough, I get a ‘Go’ ball that side against Braylon Edwards. I turn and I look back, and I remembered what Bill said. I turn back, the ball drops right in my lap for an interception,” he said .

“From that point on, there was nothing the guy would tell me where I would be like, ‘Nope’. I believed in everything. I was drinking the Kool-Aid after that.

” McCourty went on to have a successful career that included 35 interceptions, 11 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries across 13 seasons — all with the Patriots. He was an integral part to the defense and won three Super Bowls under Belichick. Both McCourty and Belichick are no longer with the Patriots after the former retired in March 2023 .

Belichick and the franchise agreed to part ways in January , and both are now in the career of media. Read more about the Patriots.
