Remember last year’s “Weightgate” micro-scandal that shook Destiny 2 ‘s community to its very core? It wasn’t quite as dramatic as that, granted, but it sure was a royal mess. Now, some players think that Destiny 2 is silently repeating that particular mistake in the background of its ongoing season. The problem with Weightgate was that Bungie initially claimed that nothing was amiss, only for the Destiny 2 community to band together with hard data to show for its efforts.
Subsequently, Bungie admitted that Legendary-tier weapons did have janky perk weighting in place, though it was a mistake rather than an attempt to make god roll items harder to get. The players’ trust in how Bungie is wrangling Destiny 2 ‘s Perk RNG has since been eroded, however, and some feel that we’ve now got an encore. Redditor Wrecluse has posted their “relatively small” dataset of 104 recorded Rake Angle sword drops which (according to them) may suggest Perk weighting.
Is Destiny 2 experiencing a new Weightgate? As per Wreckluse’s findings, “Certain perk combinations, like Rimestealer + Vorpal Weapon and Replenishing Aegis + Close to Melee, appear more frequently than others.” Conversely, “Chill Clip is relatively less common overall (~11.54% frequency in Perk 2A), which may suggest it is less weighted.
” While 104 data points might sound like a fair number to assess, it is actually a rather small sample that even Wreckluse themselves admit isn’t enough to draw concrete conclusions. As one would expect, other members of the community have been quick to call this out. I’d argue that one of the biggest problems with Wreckluse’s argument is that they haven’t kept track of all of their drops’ respective perks.
More specifically, Destiny 2 ‘s weapons roll about a dozen unique perks whenever one drops. Instead of jotting down all of them for each of the featured 104 drops, Wreckluse has only kept track of the two main perks. This makes it much harder to spot any potential RNG anomalies right off the bat.
Further, perk RNG information found at Light.gg suggests no obvious problems with Rake Angle’s drops, and data sets found using this app were what initially tipped the community off about Weightgate. With all of that in mind, it doesn’t seem like Wreckluse is actually witnessing a new round of perk RNG problems unravel.
I’d argue that this isn’t necessarily the crux of the problem in and of itself, however. Instead, the issue is that there’s a track record of Destiny 2 having RNG problems that not even Bungie was aware of. Whereas we used to be able to write such events off as bad RNG a while ago, the fact that Weightgate was a thing means it can happen again.
Wreckluse’s post is, thus, just one of many more to come, and they’re all going to be worth keeping track of just so Weightgate doesn’t happen again. In other, extremely related news, Bungie is now actively hiring more quality assurance staff to assist with future Destiny 2 releases . Over the past year or so, it feels like the game has slowly been coming apart at the seams with every new content drop and event.
Some of these bugs have been rather obvious , while others crept in only to be spotted later on. To call this anything but unacceptable would be a mistake for a game as prolific as Destiny . With Frontiers on the horizon , Bungie needs to sort out its processes to re-establish Destiny 2 as the premiere live-service co-op shooter.
Otherwise, it’s not looking great. But hey, at least we’ve all got phones to play Destiny: Rising on , right?.
