Pune: Five delivery agents were arrested and their two minor accomplices were detained on Saturday night on the charge of severely assaulting two security guards , a supervisor and an area supervisor of a housing society in Punawale. The trigger of the incident was one of the guards' advice to a delivery agent to use the service lift in the society. The delivery agent left after a heated verbal exchange with the guard.

He returned to the society after a while with at least 15 accomplices — all delivery agents. All of them attacked the victims. The suspects have been charged under sections 109 (murder attempt), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 351 (criminal intimidation), 189, 190 and 191 (rioting) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

"The arrested men were produced before a court on Sunday and they were remanded in police custody till Sept 13. The minor duo were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board," sub-inspector Ajit Kakade of the Ravet police said. One of the injured guards (27), who got six stitches on his head, lodged the complaint against the suspects.

Kakade said the incident occurred when a delivery person of an e-grocery company went to the society with an order around 11.30am on Saturday. "He became furious when the complainant told him to use the service lift instead of the passenger lift.

They had heated arguments over it. The delivery person subsequently issued threats to the complainant and left," he said. The officer said the suspect returned to the society within a few minutes with his 15 aides — all delivery agents.

"The suspect and one of his accomplices attacked the guard with a wooden stick. Their accomplices thrashed him with hands and legs," he said. Kakade said another guard, supervisor and the area supervisor of the society tried to rescue the victim.

"The suspects thrashed them also and drove away on motorcycles," he said. He said the police were searching for other suspects involved in the attack. "Our investigations are on," the officer said.
