New Delhi: Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) reached 494 Monday, marking one of the worst pollution spells that the city has recorded in the past few years, according to officials from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC). In many localities, the AQI was 500, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The CPCB’s daily bulletin showed that at least 14 out of 38 functional air quality monitoring stations in the national capital recorded 500 AQI.

These areas included Ashok Vihar, Bawana, Dwarka, Jahangirpuri, Mundka, Najafgarh, and Patparganj. In other neighbourhoods, too, the AQI remained dangerously high, inching closer to the maximum mark. An analysis of the pollution recordings of Delhi and the national capital region (NCR) is yet to be conducted.

“The last time we saw the AQI rise to such high levels was maybe one day in 2022. But we will analyse the annual data and release the report,” a senior DPCC official told ThePrint Monday. Delhi and neighbouring satellite towns have been experiencing dangerously high pollution levels over the past few days.

Lowered temperatures, coupled with calm winds and a high emissions load have worsened the capital’s air quality. The 4 pm bulletin Sunday recorded an AQI of 441, categorised as “severe” on the CPCB scale. (Edited by Tikli Basu) Also Read: Delhi’s vehicular fumes contribute 17% of air pollution Monday.
