Ludhiana: In a significant advancement for the Delhi-Katra Expressway , the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has completed most of the land acquisitions required for the Ludhiana district stretch, moving the project closer to realizing its promise of cutting travel time between Ludhiana, Delhi, and Jammu. Once completed, the expressway is expected to reduce travel time from Ludhiana to Delhi to around three hours, significantly benefiting commuters, businesses, and industries. The 399-kilometre Delhi-Katra Expressway includes a 38-km stretch within Ludhiana, covering 24 villages.
NHAI officials reported that while most of the land has been acquired, small portions in four villages — Chapar, Dhurkot, Ranguwal, and Ballowal — are pending due to ongoing arbitration, as some farmers are seeking higher compensation. Land acquisition in the remaining villages is complete, and contractors have been instructed to commence work in these areas. The expressway’s construction is divided into segments, with Package 8 covering Malerkotla to Ludhiana, which has reached 31% completion, and Package 9 from Ludhiana to Phillaur at 57.
65% completion. The projected completion dates for these sections are December 31, 2025, and September 30, 2025, respectively. Despite the steady progress, the construction faced delays on the Chapar to Dakha stretch due to farmer compensation disputes, with some of the farmers from the district pushing for compensation of ₹80 lakh per acre instead of the ₹50 lakh initially offered.
With negotiations progressing, the work is expected to accelerate in the upcoming months. Ludhiana residents, including industrialists and traders, are optimistic about the expressway’s benefits. Ravjot Singh, a local, noted that travel times to Delhi, Amritsar, and Jammu could be reduced significantly, cutting hours off trips that currently take four to five hours.
