Read More Intensifying its crackdown on foreigners staying illegally in the national capital, the Delhi Police on Monday arrested five Bangladeshi nationals. Senior officials said the formalities to deport these arrested persons will begin shortly. According to police, while two Bangladeshis were arrested from Sadar Bazar, the remaining were arrested from outer Delhi.

All of them were arrested after it was established that they had been living illegally in India and had also procured government documents, the officer added. The arrests followed an ongoing crackdown against illegal foreign residents in India, following orders from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Earlier, on March 8, the Delhi Police had conducted a verification drive against illegal immigrants at Jai Hindi Camp in the national capital’s Vasant Kunj area, wherein the people were asked to show their identity proofs for verification.

A similar drive was conducted on March 6, in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar area. In January, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had directed Delhi Police to launch a special mission to identify Bangladeshi immigrants living in the national capital. Earlier this year, in a major crackdown, the Delhi Police busted an organised gang that was helping illegal foreign residents, particularly Bangladeshis, procure government identities and stay in India illegally.

At least 12 arrests were made in this case and several Bangladeshis were deported back to their country. The case also brought the spotlight on gangs that facilitate illegal residents and provide them with all kinds of fake government identities to enjoy the facilities provided by the state. Some of them also had Indian voter identity cards, which raised suspicion of them also participating in the elections.

Police said that a detailed investigation is going on..
