A round-up of recent planning developments in North Lincolnshire

Approval has been given to an 'energy centre' at Scunthorpe General Hospital that will help make it one of the most environmentally sustainable NHS sites in the UK. The new two-storey building would house an electric-power boiler system, which would replace the site's gas-fired boilers. Overall, the NHS is investing more than £27m into Scunthorpe General Hospital to improve its environmental sustainability.

A letter previously sent out to nearby residents has stated the change of boiler systems will "lead to improved air quality in your vicinity". Read on below for more about the energy centre, and other recent planning developments in North Lincolnshire Council area, including a proposed chicken shop in Bottesford. Hospital energy centre The energy centre's application explains how it will have a positive impact on Scunthorpe 's air quality.

Simply, the hospital's existing nitric oxide-polluting (NOx) gas fired boilers within a stone's throw from homes, will be replaced by an electric steam generation plant that is non-NOx polluting. The centre will be built on the eastern extremity of the hospital site, behind Brant Road. A modular office building and workshop building will be demolished.

Besides the new boiler system, the new building will also include staff office accommodation and a workshop area. A letter was previously sent out to nearby residents by the NHS Humber Health Partnership, which is made up of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLAG) and Hull University Teaching Hospital NHS Trust (HUTH). It advised demolition work was expected in the summer.

"We will do all we can to minimise any noise and disruption," it stated. Husler Developments Ltd made the case for the proposed bungalows partly by submitting analysis of North Lincolnshire's older housing need.

This argued there was "a substantial level of unmet need for specialist older persons housing". Over 35 comments were made on the application by local residents, the majority objecting. Haxey Parish Council leant toward objection, based on it being outside the development boundary and the village having already "a number of infrastructure issues".

"This development will increase pressure on the doctor's surgery," it warned. The council refused for three reasons - being outside the development boundary, effect on open countryside, and "an unacceptable extension and intrusion of the built environment into the Area of Historic Landscape (ASHLI)" of the Isle of Axholme. The ex-pharmacy in Cambridge Avenue, Bottesford, proposed to be turned into a chicken fast food takeaway (Image: Google Streetview) Ex-pharmacy to chicken shop prompts petition against it Finally, plans to convert a former Bottesford pharmacy into a fast-food chicken shop, serving hot and cold food, have proven controversial.

The unit in Cambridge Avenue has been vacant for three years. It is estimated it would create three jobs, and an application document states: "There are ample parking spaces available for this L-shaped building." Plenty of objectors disagree, with parking the main issue cited.

"Residents do not want the streets covered with vehicles frequenting the fast food takeaway," commented one. Several have raised concern about the impact on parking for adjacent Hope House, a cancer patient support centre set up in 2019 . "Please consider Hope House in your decision as it supports very needy people and groups to support them through cancer diagnosis, life afterwards and the impact on their family.

We need to be able to attend." There has been a petition against the chicken shop submitted too, largely focused on traffic, parking and anti-social behaviour concerns, signed by dozens of people.
