Death in Paradise star Ben Miller has secured a new TV show, and fans are already hooked on the "hilarious" series. The popular Australian series, Austin, premiered on the channel on Friday, featuring Ben Miller in a starring role. With only one episode released so far, the show is still building its fan base, but if reviews from Australia are any indication, it's definitely worth watching.
Australian viewers have praised the show as "hilarious", with one fan posting on X: "Oh my god! If you can watch @ABCTV's Austin- DO IT. It's incredibly well-written and hilarious! Michael Theo from Love on the Spectrum is the lead. Congratulations to everyone involved!" Another viewer commented: "Hi Ben, Have just binged all episodes of Austin on ABCTV iView.
What a beautiful, warm-hearted, delightful program. Thank you for your part in it," reports Express . Meanwhile, another fan wrote: "Dear @ABCTV #Austin is absolutely gorgeous.
.. All actors are great, especially the adorable Michael Theo.
" The sitcom is a British-Australian collaboration, co-written by and starring Ben Miller as a successful children's book author who gets 'cancelled' after accidentally retweeting a white supremacist. Ben's character Julian later finds out he has a 28 year old neurodivergent son. Ben had previously disclosed that the inspiration to write the show came from watching Love on the Spectrum - a Netflix series that follows individuals on the autism spectrum as they explore the world of dating.
He even cast Michael Theo, the standout star from the Australian dating show, in the lead role. Discussing his decision to cast Michael, who will be making his acting debut with Austin, Ben told Radio Times: "Michael's autism is not the story. He's a very talented actor.
"I saw him on Love on the Spectrum and I thought it would be fun to lark about with him. My aim was just to make a funny show, not to campaign, not to be worthy, I'm allergic to things like that." Bridget Jones' Diary actress Sally Phillips plays Ingrid, the wife of Ben's character Julian.
Speaking about having Sally in the team, he said: "I'd seen her do it before, and she seemed a natural choice. "I'd wanted to work with Sally for decades. She came on board really early, and for a while it was just the three of us, working out what the story was.
It ended up being really close to Michael's life, as he embarks on his journey through the world, finding out who he really is.".
