Frenkie de Jong is heading back to Barcelona after been released from the Netherlands squad on “medical grounds.” The midfielder made his first appearance for the national team in 14 months when he started the 4-0 win over Hungary on Saturday. De Jong admitted after the game he wouldn’t start the Oranje’s next game but has now been withdrawn from the squad ahead of the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina along with Virgil van Dijk.
“For both Frenkie and Virgil it is better for them to leave the training camp at this moment. That decision was taken on medical grounds, with of course the interest of the players coming first,” read a club statement. De Jong has opened up on his recent ankle injury and says he still needs to take a lot of care and take extra precautions.
Barcelona will be hoping that the decision to release De Jong from the squad is another precaution and not a fresh injury setback..
