Times News Network Ludhiana: Even as a thick blanket of smog has covered the city and day temperature has dipped, nights in Ludhiana have turned considerably warmer. The city recently recorded the highest night temperature in the past 54 years since 1970 for five days from Nov 9 to 13, said data shared by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) scientists. Lowest night temperature was recorded far above normal on these days.
Compared to the average night temperature of 11 to 12 degree Celsius, temperature on these five nights was recorded above 18 degree Celsius, which means that there was deviation of over 6.5 to 7.5 degrees.
According to figures recorded by PAU’s agrometeorological observatory on these dates, the highest deviation of 7.5 degrees was recorded on Nov 12, when the lowest night temperature was 18.8 degrees against the average of 11.
3 degree Celsius. “From Nov 9 to 13, PAU’s agro met observatory recorded night temperature of over 18 degree Celsius, which is the highest recorded by the observatory since 1970. The nights have been significantly warmer,” said Dr Pavneet Kaur Kingra, professor and head of the department of climate change and agrometeorology, PAU, Ludhiana.
Even though the mercury receded significantly on the nights after Nov 13, it remained significantly higher on the following nights. On Nov 15 and 16, night temperature was 3.5 to 4.
5 degrees higher than the normal range. On the reason for the rise in night temperature, Dr Kingra said, “The latest spell was the result of foggy conditions, due to which heat couldn’t dissipate from the surface of the Earth to the upper layers of atmosphere. However, we are observing drastic fluctuations in temperature patterns, at least in the last around 10 years.
Significant variations in temperature have been recorded in a gap of a few years. It is result of the global warming and temperature fluctuations .” As for the effects on agriculture, she added, “There is no immediate effect of increase in night temperature on crops.
Most Kharif crops have already been harvested and Rabi crops are still at sowing stage. However, in the long run, such a drastic variation in temperature is cause of concern.” We also published the following articles recently Night temperatures drop across state A wave of cold has swept across Odisha, sending temperatures plummeting.
