David Fincher is directing a Quentin Tarantino-written follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with Brad Pitt set to return. THR reports that Fincher is set to direct the as-yet-untitled follow-up to Tarantino’s 2019 hit and that Pitt will reprise his role as stuntman Cliff Booth in the film. The surprising development comes after Tarantino shelved his own partial follow-up to Hollywood , which would have been titled The Movie Critic and would have been his tenth and supposedly final film.

That film would have centered on a movie reviewer for an adult magazine and would have featured Pitt reprising his role as Cliff. The report notes that the Fincher-directed film is not a direct sequel to Hollywood but is instead described as “derivative” and takes inspiration from it. The film is set up at Netflix and could shoot this summer.

Leonardo DiCaprio may also reprise his role as Rick Dalton in the film, though that is less clear. Once Upon a Time In Hollywood grossed $392.1 million on a $96 million budget for Sony Pictures and was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning Best Supporting Actor for Pitt and Best Production Design.

It’s not clear how Netflix is able to have scooped up a follow-up; Tarantino’s deal with Sony gives him an ownership stake in the film that increases every year for 20 years, at which point the film’s rights revert to him. It’s conceivable that he may have retained sequel or spinoff rights. The film will be Fincher’s first since The Killer released on Netflix in November of 2023.
