David Baskett, the incumbent for the Santa Maria Airport District is running for reelection to the board, representing District 5. Baskett says he is committed to enhancing the airport's operations and community engagement with his extensive experience in aviation and airport management, Baskett outlined his key priorities for the airport moving forward. “The number one priority is to ensure a safe and secure airport,” he emphasized, addressing past security concerns.
He also aims to improve airline services for the Santa Maria Valley, which he notes have become increasingly limited since the pandemic. Baskett highlighted the importance of supporting local aviation businesses and agricultural operations, stating, “We are fortunate to have a large area of the airport utilized by the ag community.” He believes that maintaining a balance between the aviation community and local interests is crucial for future growth.
Baskett is running for re-election amid his misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter trial. The trial stems from the May 2 death of Tiffany Ann Peterson, who was killed in a crash involving a forklift operated by Baskett. When asked if there was anything he would like to say about how the outcome of his current court case would affect the upcoming election, Baskett said, “That will be up to the voters to decide.
Sometimes they have some good stories in the press, sometimes they have some bad stories in the press and I will just leave that up to the voters." Reflecting on the evolution of the airport during his tenure, Baskett acknowledged both achievements and challenges. He noted a significant decline in airline service options but emphasized the airport's strong agricultural operations.
Baskett highlighted that with only 400 of the approximately 5,000 airports in the country equipped with control towers, the Santa Maria Airport’s status as an FAA 139 airport positions it well for increased airline services. “We are fully qualified to accommodate more airlines when they are ready to serve our community,” he stated. Baskett addressed the ongoing environmental issues, including a recent agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency regarding the preservation of the endangered tiger salamander.
He described the agreement as “terrible,” but said that it is a necessary step forward, despite its impact on the airport's budget — equivalent to a year’s income. Community concerns, particularly about noise from aircraft, are also on Baskett’s radar. He aims to work with the military and community members to find a balance that respects both parties.
“I've had ladies call me who say they love to hear the noise of the jets coming in, it gives them a sense of security and there’s other people who the noise causes problems with, especially pets,” said Baskett. A pilot himself, Baskett envisions expanding educational opportunities in aviation schools within the community, including flight training and maintenance programs. “I hope to see more potential pilots learn to fly at our airport,” he remarked.
As the election approaches, Baskett said this may be his last four years on the board and encourages the community to consider his track record and future plans. “I believe that in the next four years, I can help create a much better airport,” he said..
