Olive Cypriot Food, which has been in the market since 2022, was told major improvement is necessary after an inspection at the street food stand on December 13. Following the news, a post purportedly from the owner of Olive Cypriot Food Hasbi Yılmaz said the only issue with the stand was related to the general hot water supply in the market hall. The statement said this was something “out of their control” and that it was “not a reflection of our own standards and does not impact the quality of food or cleanliness in our shop”.

He told The Northern Echo: “It was disappointing to learn of Olive Cypriot Food's 1 star hygiene rating, especially given the good quality of their food and the high standards of practice in their kitchen. “We have nine other food businesses within Darlington Market, all with a 5 star rating, which is a true reflection of the high standards we expect of our traders, and the quality food they produce.
“We are in discussions with the owner over their maintenance of the hot water tank they installed as part of their fitout in their unit, and are entirely in control and responsible for. “We hope to support them in getting back on track immediately.” As previously reported, The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has not yet released the individual ratings for each of the three categories looked at during the inspection at the time of publication.
Olive Cypriot Food, which launched in the market following the departure of Hungarian vendor Taste of Budapest, continues to prove popular for its halloumi pittas and chicken gyros to feta cheese salads. Recommended reading: Get more from The Northern Echo with a digital subscription. Click here .
The statement posted online said they want to reassure customers that the “quality of our food and hygiene standards are top priorities for us.” This concluded with a promise to “remain committed to upholding the high quality and hygiene you’ve come to expect”. The Northern Echo has contacted Olive Cypriot Food for comment, but it has not yet responded.
