Four areas are expected to experience a “danger level” heat index on Tuesday, PAGASA said in its daily forecast. PAGASA classifies a heat index between 42°C and 51°C in the “danger” category, posing health risks such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. In its 5 p.

m. March 31 bulletin, the state weather bureau said the highest heat index expected in the country on Tuesday will be 46°C, which will be felt in Dagupan City, Pangasinan. A 43°C heat index is expected to be measured in Iba, Zambales and Virac (Synop), Catanduanes.

Meanwhile, Butuan City, Agusan Del Norte could also reach up to 42°C. In Metro Manila, a high of 37°C is expected to hit NAIA Pasay City and Science Garden, Quezon City. A heat index from 33°C to 41°C is under the “extreme caution” category, where heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible, and continuing activity could lead to heat stroke.

The heat index measures how hot it feels to the human body, factoring in humidity along with the actual air temperature. PAGASA said a heat index of up to 50°C could hit some parts of the country during the dry season this year. According to PAGASA assistant weather services chief Chris Perez, the highest heat index may be felt around April or May.
