Damon Wayans Sr. has detailed his “awkward” family gatherings after he fell in love with his nephew’s ex-girlfriend. The “My Wife and Kids” alum, 64, revealed the dating oversight during an appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay podcast” last week.
“This can’t be true...
that you dated the same woman that your nephew was?” the former NFL star asked the comedian. “I was in love with her, that’s the thing,” Wayans, 64, said. “You ain’t never done the Jackson 5?” he quipped, referencing Jermaine Jackson marrying his brother Randy Jackson’s ex-girlfriend, Alejandra Oaziaza.
Wayans clarified that his nephew and the woman, whom he did not name, were not “in love” during their ill-fated relationship. Sharpe, who was visibly taken aback at the revelation, added, “That’s off limits, Damon.” “No, but it wasn’t like they were in love,” the “Major Payne” alum responded.
“You know how small the pool is out here in Cali? The dating pool?” He then clarified that he fell in love with the woman around 2001 — noting that the relationship took place after his divorce from Lisa Thorner. “I got divorced and I was by myself for two years,” he said. “And then I saw her [his nephew’s ex] and I was just like, ‘Oh my God.
I’m in love.’ And then I found out my nephew had dated [her].” Wayans admitted that despite his strong feelings for the woman, he made sure to speak to his nephew before kickstarting anything serious with her.
“I’m like, you know, ‘What’s up?’ and he’s like, ‘That’s you.’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, pass the Courvoisier, let’s go!’ And I went ahead and I fell in love and it was okay,” he explained. Still, the romance seemingly shifted the dynamics within the family, he admits.
“Family gatherings is awkward,” he quipped. Elsewhere in the interview, Wayans admitted that he “made a lot of money” in residual checks from “My Wife and Kids,” which ran from 2001 to 2005. The candid revelation came after Sharpe brought up Bentley Evans’s recent comments on the “Holdin’ Court” podcast , in which he said he never received a syndication check from “The Jamie Foxx Show” — despite being the talk show’s co-creator, writer and showrunner.
“It was on a network, right?” Wayans said of “The Jamie Foxx Show,” which aired on The WB from 1996 to 2001. “I made a lot of money off of ‘My Wife and Kids.’ I can’t relate to that.
” “With WB, my brothers didn’t really make money off the Wayan’s Brothers show. Like I said, I made a lot of money from ‘Wife and Kids.’ I still get checks,” he added.
“Not to rub it in but I still get checks.” The hit sitcom aired for a total of five seasons, and became syndicated in September 2005..
