MIRI (Nov 11): Curtin University Malaysia displayed its support to community welfare and child advocacy by supporting the Talian Kasih Advocacy Programme 2.0 at SK Merbau here, following the recent success of the university’s mural project held at SMK Taman Tunku.

At SK Merbau, a team of passionate Diploma in General Studies students of the School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE) at Curtin Malaysia led the programme. The university in a press statement said Aiman Amzar Mohd Syamaizar led the team, comprising members Denzel Tan and Ryan Kong Zi Yan, with the guidance of lecturers Valerie Velina Nagreg and Farahezza Hairon Nizar. “Together, the team produced a powerful and vibrant mural that now stands as a permanent reminder of community support for child welfare at SK Merbau.



“The mural, designed to symbolise Talian Kasih Helpline’s mission, features vivid imagery of family, unity, and protection, which resonates deeply with the programme’s goals. “As a tribute to International Children’s Day, the mural underscores the shared responsibility to protect children and reinforces their sense of safety and belonging within the community,” it said. Organised by the Miri Division Child Welfare Team and supported by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, the Talian Kasih Advocacy Programme 2.

0 aims to raise awareness on child protection resources such as the Talian Kasih Helpline. The programme featured educational talks, showcases, and interactive sessions, meant to foster a culture of care and awareness for children’s safety and rights, as well as received contributions from the National Population and Family Development Board, National Anti-Drug Agency, and Royal Malaysia Police. Councillor Jeffery Phang represented state Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin in officiating the event.

In his address, Phang lauded the initiative as a significant step forward in creating a supportive environment for Miri’s youth, emphasising the need for community collaboration in promoting child welfare..
