The curfew in four districts of Manipur , which has been experiencing ethnic violence since May 2023, was relaxed for nine hours on Monday. This decision allowed residents to purchase essential items such as food and medicines. However, the ban on mobile internet services has been extended until September 20 amid ongoing tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

Curfew imposed amid protests for unified command The curfew was initially imposed last Tuesday in response to protests demanding that the Manipur government be given control over the unified command for security operations. This followed escalating violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which began in May 2023 and intensified this month with drone and rocket attacks resulting in at least nine fatalities. On September 8, thousands of students marched in Imphal , giving authorities a 24-hour ultimatum to meet their demand.

Curfew relaxation and continued internet suspension During the curfew relaxation period, residents were seen flocking to markets for essential supplies, and inter-district passenger services resumed operations. However, officials warned that no gatherings or protests would be permitted without prior approval. The Manipur government has also decided to extend the suspension of internet and mobile data services in six districts for another five days from September 15, following a review of the law and order situation, reports said.

Police warn against attacks, urge peaceful protests The Manipur Police have issued a warning of necessary anti-riot actions if protesters continue attacking security forces with lethal weapons. This came after a 34-year-old woman suffered a miscarriage due to asphyxiation from tear gas shells fired during a protest. Deputy Inspector General of Police N Herojit urged the public to conduct protests in a democratic manner and appealed against sharing live videos of protests that could incite further violence.
