The Punjab government has taken a bold step towards combating crime by proposing the establishment of the Crime Control Department (CCD), which has been approved by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. This new initiative aims to significantly enhance law enforcement capabilities and ensure the safety and security of the people across the province. Modelled after the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), the CCD is set to be a specialised unit within the Punjab Police, focusing on addressing major criminal activities and bolstering crime-fighting mechanisms.
The CCD’s primary mission will be to tackle major forms of organised crime. These include the trafficking of drugs, the elimination of no-go areas, the security of sensitive events, and the prevention of high-profile crimes such as kidnapping for ransom, extortion, robbery, robbery-murder, and robbery-rape cases. Additionally, the CCD will focus on combating land grabbing and organised theft, which have plagued various parts of the province.
Rather than merely responding to crimes, the department will adopt proactive strategies aimed at preventing these crimes before they occur. One of its significant objectives will be to dismantle mafia groups and criminal syndicates operating within the region. Additionally, the CCD will establish its own police stations in each district, modelled on the operational structure of the CTD. The CCD will work in close collaboration with other police units, ensuring that all law enforcement efforts are coordinated efficiently.
A key component of the CCD’s strategy will be the use of advanced surveillance technologies, such as drone monitoring systems. In the event of a crime, these drones will be dispatched to the scene within five minutes, providing real-time intelligence and assisting in the swift apprehension of criminals. The department will also develop a centralised data system to track crime patterns and criminal activities across the province, enabling a more strategic and data-driven approach to law enforcement.
To support the effective operation of the CCD, its personnel will undergo specialised training modelled after the successful methods used by the CTD. Moreover, CCD officers will receive salaries and allowances comparable to those of CTD staff, ensuring that the department attracts and retains highly skilled personnel. The department will be equipped with elite police units, technical resources, and logistical support to carry out operations targeting high-profile criminals.
