MS Dhoni is the biggest player who has played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and he remains the face of the franchise despite giving up captaincy before IPL 2024. Dhoni has enjoyed huge success with CSK and he is likely to continue his association with the franchise. The Yellow Army is likely to retain Dhoni in the uncapped category for Rs 4 crore.

Dhoni is a five-time IPL-winning captain with CSK and the Yellow Army was a force under his leadership. CSK made it to the second round of every season from IPL 2008 to 2019. Dhoni captained CSK to two IPL title wins after retiring from international cricket.

But do you know that CSK wanted to sign another player before Dhoni? Speaking on his YouTube channel, Subramaniam Badrinath revealed that CSK wanted to sign Virender Sehwag before they inked on Dhoni. "The CSK management had decided (before IPL 2008) on picking Sehwag, but Sehwag himself said that he was brought up in Delhi, so he would have a better connection (with Delhi Daredevils). The management agreed for him (Sehwag) to play in Delhi, thinking it would be better.

Then came the auctions, and they saw who was the better player. Before that India won the 2007 World T20. And only then did they decide to sign Dhoni," the former CSK batsman revealed a few years back.

Sehwag joined Delhi Capitals (then known as Delhi Daredevils) and was appointed their captain. Sehwag had a six-year stint with Delhi Capitals (DC). DC made a bold call and they decided against retaining any player before the IPL 2014 mega-auction.

Punjab Kings (then known as Kings XI Punjab) signed Sehwag in the mega-auction. The opening batsman had a two-year stint with Punjab. Sehwag retired in 2015 without winning an IPL trophy.

He continued his association with Punjab Kings (PBKS) and spearheaded their coaching staff till IPL 2018. Sehwag has been associated with IPL as a commentator in the past couple of seasons.
