The highly-praised war drama film Atonement is set to grace our television screens this weekend, giving fans another opportunity to enjoy the Oscar-winning flick. The movie will be broadcast on BBC One on Saturday night at 11:10pm and will subsequently be available for viewing on BBC iPlayer . Atonement boasts a star-studded cast including James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, Saoirse Ronan, Romola Garai and Vanessa Redgrave, and is based on Ian McEwan's 2001 novel.

The film was directed by Joe Wright, known for his work on Pride and Prejudice, Hanna and The Woman in the Window. The plot revolves around a 13-year-old aspiring writer named Briony Tallis who drastically alters several lives when she falsely accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he didn't commit, reports the Manchester Evening News . The narrative traces the repercussions of this crime over the next six decades, beginning in the 1930s.



Atonement premiered at both the 2007 Vancouver International Film Festival and the 64th Venice International Film Festival. Critics lauded the performances, emotional depth, musical score, cinematography and the film's incorporation of real-life events.

At the 80th Academy Awards, Atonement received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress for Saoirse, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score, the latter of which it won. The film stormed the 61st British Academy Film Awards with 14 nominations and scooped up the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Drama. Scoring a solid 7.
