October 26: New Zealand Breach Fortress India New Zealand left India and the cricketing world shell-shocked, hammering the home team with stunning wins in Bengaluru and Pune in the first two Tests of the three-match series. The pace duo of Matt Henry and William O’Rourke routed India for 46 in the first innings in overcast conditions in Bengaluru. Rachin Ravindra then smashed a magnificent 134 to press home the advantage.
New Zealand went on to register a comprehensive eight-wicket victory – it was just their third Test win on Indian soil and their first since Mumbai 1988. The win in Pune was even more impressive as New Zealand triumphed on a rank turner, defeating the hosts by a big margin of 113 runs. Mitchell Santner was the star with the ball for the visitors as he tormented the Indian line-up in their own backyard and returned with a seven-wicket haul in the first innings.
India were skittled for a paltry 156 in reply to New Zealand’s 259. From thereon, the visitors dominated the proceedings. Santner picked six more in the second and ended with 13-157 for the match, which were the third-best bowling figures for an overseas bowler in a Test match in India.
It was a landmark moment in New Zealand’s Test history as they became the first team after England (2012) to win a Test series in India. October 9: Root Surpasses Cook As England’s Highest Run-Getter Joe Root surpassed Alastair Cook as England’s leading run-getter in Test cricket when he reached 71 on Day 3 of the series opener against Pakistan in Multan. Root took 147 Tests to eclipse Cook’s record, who had an aggregate of 12,472 runs in 161 Tests.
He is currently the fifth-highest run-getter in Test cricket after Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid. October 23: Zimbabwe Blast Highest T20I Total Zimbabwe created history by smashing the highest team total in T20Is against Gambia in an ICC T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Africa Qualifier fixture in Nairobi. Zimbabwe blasted 344/4 in 20 overs with Sikandar Raza hammering an unbeaten 133 of just 43 deliveries.
He rocketed to his hundred off 33 deliveries, making it the joint second-fastest ton in T20I history. October 20: New Zealand Women Win Maiden T20 World Cup New Zealand women created history, defeating the more fancied South Africa women by 32 runs in the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Dubai. It was the maiden victory for New Zealand (men or women’s team) at the T20 World Cup.
Amelia Kerr was the star for New Zealand in the final, scoring 43 off 38 deliveries before picking three crucial wickets. She returned as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 15 dismissals. October 6: St Lucia Lift Maiden CPL Title St Lucia Kings defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors by six wickets in the final of the 2024 Caribbean Premier League, lifting their maiden title.
Afghanistan chinaman Noor Ahmad was the highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 22 dismissals in 12 matches at a strike rate of 12.8 and economy of 6.19.
Johnson Charles was the highest scorer for Kings with an aggregate of 452 runs at a strike rate of 153.2, with four fifties. He formed a formidable opening pair with Faf du Plessis, who was not far behind with an aggregate of 405 runs.
That concludes part 10 of our 2024 cricket series. The 11th installment will feature India's unprecedented 0-3 home whitewash to New Zealand, followed by a remarkable Perth Test triumph, and much more.
