Holmer Green First School and Pre-School participated in the National Gallery's Take One Picture project, using Canaletto's 'A Regatta on the Grand Canal' as their muse. The painting was gradually revealed to the students, sparking curiosity and lively discussions. Once the full image was unveiled, the school embarked on a week of artistic exploration.
Each year group interpreted the painting from a unique perspective, creating hands-on projects to bring its details to life. Pre-schoolers were inspired by the water in the painting, creating colourful fish to 'swim' through their own Venetian-inspired canals. Reception classes focused on the movement of the boats and waves, constructing 3D canal scenes from various materials.
Year one students explored the beauty of Venetian Murano glass, designing intricate glass-inspired plates and crafting gondola scenes. Year two embraced the elegance of Venice, designing ornate masks inspired by the city's famous carnival, and decorating picture frames and tiles with patterns found in Venetian architecture. In English, students imagined themselves in Venice, writing postcards describing the lively scenes along the Grand Canal. They also created persuasive travel posters, encouraging visitors to explore the city's wonders. Science lessons became hands-on experiments, as students investigated floating and sinking by testing different materials.
Maths activities focused on symmetry and repeating patterns, inspired by the reflections in the water and the designs of Murano glass. The week culminated in a vibrant exhibition, where families were invited to admire the students' work. The room was filled with an explosion of colour, texture, and creativity, showcasing the effort and imagination poured into each piece.
As parents and carers explored the displays, enjoying tea and cake, they had the chance to celebrate not only the students' artistic achievements but also their enthusiasm and dedication. Holmer Green First School and Pre-School said: "At Holmer Green First School and Pre-School, creativity took centre stage as we immersed ourselves in The National Gallery’s Take One Picture project. "This year, our inspiration came from A Regatta on the Grand Canal by Canaletto, a breathtaking depiction of Venice in all its splendour.
"We are incredibly proud of our young artists for embracing this project with such passion and creativity. "Their hard work and enthusiasm have truly brought Canaletto’s masterpiece to life in ways that will be remembered for years to come.".
