A creative retreat near Northwich is being transformed into a woodland. Toolerstone, a not-for-profit centre for creative workshops in Sandiway, is turning into a thriving green space with the help of Trees for Climate funding and The Mersey Forest. The transformation is the brainchild of landowner Camilla Thomas, who aims to create a lasting environmental legacy for the community and nature.

Between September 2021 and January 2025, Toolerstone ran workshops in gardening, floristry, and painting inspired by the natural surroundings. By the time it closed, more than 1,500 places had been gifted.

Now, the land is being repurposed. Once used for maize cultivation, the site will be enriched with wildflower planting to boost biodiversity. A total of 6,705 trees will be planted across 3.

75 hectares, with a variety of species including pedunculate oak, silver birch, sycamore, and wild cherry. Ms Thomas said: "We purchased the field next to our home to protect it from future development.

"While thinking about what to do with the land, we became inspired by the powerful impact planting trees can have on climate change. "We quickly found ourselves committed to turning it into a woodland." She expressed gratitude to The Mersey Forest for their support, stating: "Dave has been incredible, making the whole process smooth and straightforward.

"With the whole community on board, we’ve hosted several planting events, including those with local schools, and we’re excited to see the woodland grow and wildlife return." The Toolerstone Woodland Project is a community effort, involving local volunteers and schoolchildren. More than 1,300 trees have been planted so far, with nearly 150 people participating in the February planting days.

Children involved in the planting shared their excitement, saying: "This was the loveliest day of my life. "I’ve helped the world by planting trees." " While community efforts have planted many of the trees, contractors will complete the work to ensure full coverage and successful establishment. The woodland will be carefully maintained with ongoing support to ensure its long-term success..
