Pune: Shiv Sena MP Shrirang Barne , in a letter to police commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey, has alleged ‘ill-treatment' to people and rampant ‘ hafta vasooli ' by the Pimpri Chinchwad police . The Maval MP , who met Choubey on Tuesday, wrote that many citizens have approached him with complaints that they were not being entertained by the police, particularly at Hinjewadi, Wakad, Kalewadi and Sangvi police stations under the Pimpri Chinchwad police's jurisdiction. Barne's letter said, "The police personnel and officers in several police stations are involved in ‘hafta vasooli' (extortion of money) from citizens, saying that they have to give it to their seniors.

" He added that such policemen and officers seem to be responsible for rising crime in the city. Choubey, who confirmed that he has received Barne's letter, said a probe has been ordered. "The MP mentioned four police stations in his letter.

I have told the deputy police commissioner to conduct an inquiry," he told TOI on Wednesday. Barne told reporters on Wednesday that citizens were made to sit in police stations for hours and harassed if a public representative called to intervene in the matter. The MP added that if police fail to take appropriate action, he will launch an agitation.

The MP alleged that the Pimpri Chinchwad police are only interested in cases related to land disputes, its purchase and sale, or cases related to builders. "They seem to have no interest in solving common people's problems. I was informed by people from my constituency that whenever a common citizen goes to a police station with a complaint, it is not immediately attended to and they are told to wait and mentally harassed for hours," he added.

The Shiv Sena leader said that such complaints do not reach the chief minister who is also the home minister as people prefer to take them up with local representatives. He said, "People have reposed their faith in the Mahayuti govt and brought us to power again. We have to ensure that they continue to trust us.

Hence, as a public representative from the ruling party, I have raised this matter with the police chief and sought appropriate action." Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India . Don't miss daily games like Crossword , Sudoku , Location Guesser and Mini Crossword .
