Coyote men pull away from Dakota Wesleyan in hoops battle

After a pesky opening 10 minutes from their NAIA visitors from Dakota Wesleyan, the Coyotes pulled away and picked up a home victory.

VERMILLION — After a pesky opening 10 minutes from their NAIA visitors from Dakota Wesleyan, the University of South Dakota men’s basketball team pulled away and picked up a home victory 92-69 on Thursday night at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. USD shot 60.6% from the field in the opening 20 minutes but it took a 25-5 Coyote run to end the first half to shake the Tigers and lead 49-29 at intermission.

Isaac Bruns had a game-high 23 points from off the bench, finishing 10-for-14 from the field and drilling three 3-pointers. ADVERTISEMENT Kaleb Stewart had 13 points and Chase Forte finished with 11 points for the Coyotes, who shot 58% from the field in the game. Alongside Bruns, Quandre Bullock and Mayuom Buom each had eight points to add to a 50-point night off the bench for the Coyotes, who moved to 3-1 on the season with the victory, USD’s second over an NAIA team this season after beating fellow Great Plains Athletic Conference squad Mount Marty University on Sunday.



The Coyotes finished with a 30-15 edge on points off turnovers and 44-24 for points in the paint. The Tigers whittled the USD lead down to nine points with 10:03 left in the game on a pair of free throws from Vermillion native Jakob Dobney but USD answered with a 14-2 run to push the lead to nearly 20 points. DWU, which played the game as an exhibition, had a strong effort from Blaze Lubbers, who had 15 points and six rebounds on 6-for-11 shooting.

Tampa Scott IV had 13 points and Sam Aslesen posted nine points for the Tigers, who finished 8-for-22 on 3-pointers in the game and 42.4% from the field overall. USD (4-1) will have the weekend off and will hit the road for a Wednesday, Nov.
