The Dallas Cowboys aren't done with Ezekiel Elliott just yet, though the relationship is trending in that direction after the team piled on to what has been a miserable season with an embarrassing punishment for the fading star running back. The Cowboys (3-4) left Elliott behind in Dallas as the team headed east to Georgia for a critical showdown with the Atlanta Falcons , which the organization announced publicly on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Reporting around the decision indicates that the team made the call for disciplinary reasons, though has yet to include the precise nature of Elliott's transgression. "Elliott is sidelined for disciplinary reasons, according to a league source," The Athletic reported in the aftermath of the Cowboys' announcement. © Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports A two-time NFL rushing champ (2016, 2018), Elliott returned to Dallas this season after a one-year stint with the New England Patriots that proved to be the worst of his career to that point.
He produced career lows in carries (184), rush yards (643), rush TDs (3) and rush yards per attempt (3.5). Things have only gotten worse for Elliott now that he's back in white and blue.
The running back has just 148 rush yards and 2 scores on 3.1 yards per attempt. Rico Dowdle has clearly surpassed Elliott on the depth chart as the Cowboys' top running back in 2024, not that doing so says much for Dowdle's efforts.
Dallas is the worst team in the league in terms of total rush yards, rush yards per game and rush yards per attempt through Week 8. "Elliott’s season is showing the 29-year-old has very little left in the tank. His longest run has been 11 yards," The Athletic wrote in its Saturday report on what is essentially a one-game, team-imposed suspension for the running back.
"He’s lost the ability to break tackles like he once used to, and his speed has diminished greatly." Related: 'Dumbfounded!' Zeke Wants Answers as Rico Stars.
