Healthcare leaders are calling for those most at risk from Covid-19 to get their spring booster jab. In Swindon, and Wiltshire, the vaccine is now available for booking for all adults aged 75 and over, as well as anyone over the age of six months with a weakened immune system. Older adults in care homes will receive the vaccine in their homes.
The spring booster vaccine is crucial for people who are particularly vulnerable to Covid-19, as it provides the best protection against the virus. Appointments for vaccinations can be made by calling 119 or visiting the NHS website.
Gill May, the chief nursing officer for Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board, emphasised the importance of the vaccine. She said: "Covid-19 is a particularly nasty virus, and has the potential to make some of the most vulnerable people in our communities very poorly. "The effects of the virus, which is just as prevalent during the spring and summer as it is in the colder months, can often be life-threatening for those who are older or already living with a long-term health condition.
"Although the height of the pandemic may seem like a distant memory for many, hospitals in our region still find their wards occupied by people who have fallen seriously ill with Covid-19 and need urgent intervention. "Getting vaccinated is an added layer of protection against Covid-19, and ensures that eligible people whose immunity may have dropped can approach the summer months with renewed confidence regarding their protection against the virus." Invitations to eligible individuals will be sent via text message or letter.
However, people do not need to wait for this invitation and can book their appointment now. Vaccinations are available at GP practices, pharmacies, and other community locations. Some walk-in clinics are also providing vaccinations without the need for a pre-booked appointment.

During the last Covid-19 booster campaign, more than 9.8 million vaccinations were given nationwide, with about 218,000 in Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire.
This made the local health and care systems among the best in the country for vaccine uptake. Further information on Covid-19 and details about the booster vaccine eligibility can be found online. The Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board manages the local NHS budget and arranges health services for a population of 940,000 people.
