Boots Opticians on Daventry Road has optomap scans to detect health conditions in patients

A city opticians has unveiled new hi-tech kit which could help detect deadly conditions. Boots Opticians in Coventry is one of two city stores to provide customers with the most advanced eye tests. The Cheylesmore branch on Daventry Road has unveled optomap, a test that helps detect signs of serious health conditions including signs of diabetes and heart disease.

Tests, which scan a large portion of the eye's retina, can also give an early warning to the risk of strokes. The Cheylesmore branch, which is run by Raj Jogia alongside his sister Radhika and mother Komal, says the advanced equipment is a 'game-changer' and is applicable to people of all ages to use the new state-of-the-art equipment. "The test helps to capture more than 80 percent of your retina, whereas in a typical eye test, it's usually around 10 percent.

It gives great attention to detail where we can detect the earliest signs of disease and refer customers to the hospital straight away, rather than having to ring the GP and wait for a referral. Boots says that the opto map eye scan is 'quick and painless'.

Once a scan is taken, the optometrists examine the high-resolution 3D images before discussing the results, comparing them with previous scans, and referring patients to the relevant specialists. Raj has managed the store for twelve years and says the local community has been supportive since day one. "We have made a lot of friends over the years since being here, and because we are part of this row of shops where we all support one another, it's amazing.

"We get to know the patients as they become our regulars, and our continuity with care makes us stand out. We also support the local businesses, and it's a nice atmosphere to be in where we can help one another out," Raj said. Managing Director at Boots Opticians Kyle Rowe said: "This innovative technology not only gives patients a more detailed eye exam compared to traditional eye tests, but it can also give a more accurate picture of their health, detecting early signs of many serious health conditions.

This is transformative in terms of empowering patients to make more informed decisions about their overall health." Robert Rapier, a patient who was diagnosed with a health condition by an optomap scan, said: "I was worried, but thanks to the early detection, I was able to receive prompt treatment from an ophthalmologist. The opto map scan quite simply saved my life; this cutting-edge scan is a game-changer for eye health, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of it.
