1 2 Pune: The motor vehicles court on Saturday sent a businessman and a casual worker to three and four days of simple imprisonment, respectively, and fined them Rs10,000 each for drunk driving . Ram Kumar Bharati (45), businessman from Nehrunagar in Pimpri, and Dattatraya Satish Tupe (26), casual worker from Sane Chowk in Chikhali, were first-time offenders. The duo were also convicted for other traffic offences such as driving without a licence and dangerous driving.
Bharati and Tupe deposited a collective fine of Rs20,000 before the court after the orders were pronounced. They were later sent to the Yerawada Central Prison. Assistant public prosecutor Varshrani Jadhav said in two separate incidents, Pimpri traffic police took action against Bharati and Tupe after they were caught driving on motorbikes dangerously under the influence of alcohol and without driving licences at Pimpri Chowk and Yashwantnagar Chowk on Dec 31, 2024.
Traffic police, in their chargesheets, said the two accused were subjected to breath analyser tests, and it was confirmed that they were heavily drunk. Jadhav said the accused voluntarily pleaded guilty, but they do not deserve mercy from the law. She urged the court to impose maximum punishment on them as driving under the influence of alcohol can endanger their lives and those of others.
Principal magistrate Amrit Birajdar said the two accused voluntarily pleaded guilty under the provisions of sections 181 (driving without licence), 184 (dangerous driving), and 184 (drunk driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act . But imposing a fine on them would not create deterrence among traffic rule violators unless they are imprisoned in jail for three and four days, respectively, Birajdar said.
