AKRON, Ohio — A couple has been arrested and charged in Summit County after they were accused of physically and sexually assaulting an 11-month-old girl in their care, resulting in multiple broken bones and internal injuries that nearly killed the child. Jason Santos, 37, of Stony Creek, N.Y.

, and Jamilee Hunt, 37, of Hudson Falls, Ohio, each are facing one count of rape, five counts of felonious assault, and two counts of endangering children, according to Summit County court records. Hunt also was indicted on another county of endangering because she has a previous conviction for an offense involving neglect, abandonment, contributing to the delinquency of, or physical abuse of a child. Santos and Hunt each are being held in the Summit County Jail on a $1 million bond, jail records show.

According to a news release from Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich, Springfield Township police officers and fire department workers were called to the Red Roof Inn on South Arlington Road on Nov. 22 on a report there was an unresponsive infant in one of the rooms. Rescuers were able to revive the infant girl with CPR.

The news release says the infant had multiple fractures of her arms, legs, and ribs, and extensive bruising all over her body. There also were injuries to her internal organs. She was taken to a hospital doctors said the infant’s injuries were consistent with sexual assault, the news release says.

The infant is continuing to recover in a hospital. Investigators say Santos and Hunt were responsible for caring for the infant and caused her injuries. The news release did not say whether Santos and Hunt are the infant’s parents or related to her.

“These were horrific crimes against a baby and my office will work hard to hold these offenders accountable,” Kolkovich said in a statement. “I want to thank the Springfield Township first responders for their quick action that saved this child’s life and I hope that her condition continues to improve.” Santos’ and Hunt’s next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.

If convicted of all charges, both would face maximum sentences of life in prison, the news release says..
