AFC ended their losing streak on Tuesday and now boss Nelson Jardim wants to make up for a poor night on home soil last time out at Rodney Parade. The Exiles entertain Fleetwood in League Two with the aim of building on the 2-0 win at Gillingham in midweek that was earned by first-half goals by Matt Baker and Kyle Hudlin, then a resolute defensive display. County ended a run of three straight losses with victory in Kent and now build to get back to winning ways in Newport.

Eight days ago they were turned over 3-0 by Chesterfield when a clanger by goalkeeper Nick Townsend and defender Kyle Jameson allowed the visitors to lead inside a minute. A late brace by Will Grigg sealed the spoils for the Spireites, whose boss Paul Cook contacted Jardim this week to congratulate him on the win at Gillingham after the harsh scoreline in Newport. The County boss wants to ensure the Amber Army aren’t heading home with frowns at 5pm.

“Tuesday was a good performance all-round from ourselves and will only breed us confidence going forward,” said the head coach. “We want to win to make up for the last home defeat. The fans have been great to us, it’s always disappointing for them when we don’t win but I think they can see that we are always trying.

“I can’t promise that we will win every game, but one thing I can promise is that everyone at this football club is doing their best everyday to make sure we get them wins. “I work 24/7 for this club and so does everyone else around me, and I will keep doing that every day to keep us improving. Yes, some of the days don’t go the way we want but we always keep believing.

“We’ll try and put in a good performance, matched by hopefully a good result.” Fleetwood head to Newport after defeats to Port Vale and Crewe but have been good travellers in League Two. Charlie Adam’s side drew at Notts County, beat strugglers Carlisle and Cheltenham and had an eye-catching 6-2 win at high-flying Walsall.

“We know Fleetwood were relegated last season but we know they will be aiming to get straight back into League One,” said Jardim. “They’ve got a strong squad, a well-known manager and we know it’s going to be difficult. They’ve picked up a lot of points away this season which shows again it will be difficult.

“We have to make it as difficult for them as possible and hopefully we can have a good result for us. "It’s down to us to make we sure we’ve got a clear idea of how they want to play and how we can stop them.”.
