COLUMBUS, Ohio — Country music superstar Jelly Roll was in Columbus on Wednesday for a concert at Nationwide Arena, part of his “The Beautifully Broken” tour. But WCMH Channel 4 reports the musician took some time before the show to visit the Franklin County Juvenile Intervention Center, where he met with the juveniles and even played cards with them. Jelly Roll has been one of the most successful country musicians in recent years.
He’s had three No. 1 hits in 2023, won the award for best new artist from the Country Music Association, and he’s nominated for two Grammy Awards. But the 39-year-old musician, whose real name is Jason DeFord, is familiar with what it’s like to be held in detention, CBS News reports .
He spent time in and out of jail for various drug offenses, theft and aggravated robbery beginning when he was 14 years old. WSYX Channel 6 reports he spoke to the juveniles in Columbus about his own experiences. “I know that I’ve sat in your seat and when I did, I know that no one ever came in and poured love on me,” he said.
“I’ve won a bunch of awards, I’ve made a bunch of money, but mostly what I try to do a bunch of is giving back.” Jelly Roll recently released a new album , “Beautifully Broken,” his third in four years and 10th overall. Jelly Roll will also be part of this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Oct.
