A recent recall has become the focus of online ridicule. On Oct. 11, a voluntary recall was initiated by Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest LLC of nearly 80,000 pounds of butter distributed in Texas and sold at Costco.
The recall includes (about 46,800 pounds) of 16-ounce, 4-stick packs of Kirkland Signature Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter and (about 32,400 pounds) of 16-ounce, 4-stick packs of Kirkland Signature Salted Sweet Cream Butter. The FDA classified the recall on Nov. 7 as a Class II for potentially exposing users to a curious “undeclared allergen” in the butter products: milk.
“Butter lists cream, but may be missing the Contains Milk statement,” wrote the FDA. The recall lists six lots of products that have “Best By” dates of Feb. 22, 2025 to March 29, 2025.
If you have bought Kirkland Signature brand butter on or before Oct. 11, it matches the recall information and you have a sensitivity or allergy to milk, dispose of it as soon as possible or return it to your local Costco for a refund. The FDA as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.
” This is lower on the scale than a Class I recall, which offers a “reasonable probability” that users of the product may experience “serious adverse health consequences or death.” A of frozen chicken nuggets and tenders for possible metal contamination from August is a recent example.
